National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO, Department of Space, Govt. of India, is engaged in the acquisition of Remote Sensing Satellite data, its dissemination, operation of flight facility, analysis and interpretation of Remote Sensing data for resource management etc. With the launch of our own country's Remote Sensing satellites under the IRS series, together with the satellite systems of other countries as well, such as LANDSAT (USA), ERS (ESA-EUROPE), NOAA (USA),IKONOS (USA) and QUICK BIRD (USA) which are already in the orbit, enormous data is and will be available to the users. For effective utilisation of such data, availability of trained personnel at various levels is essential. NRSC, aiming to promote operational remote sensing activity in the country and realizing the need for such trained manpower, has been offering training courses to resource scientists and technologists in various disciplines.
Objective
The intention is to impart training to render resource - scientists (in Agriculture, Soils, Forestry, Geology, Geomorphology, Landuse, Hydrology, Oceanography etc.,) conversant with modern and operational aspects of Remote Sensing and to build confidence in them for using remote sensing technology in their survey for all the activities relating to Earth Resources. Efforts are made to transfer knowledge in generic mode to enhance the thinking capabilities and capacity of trainee officers to ensure germination of inspiration for embedding Remote Sensing technology with the rich field experience of trainee officers in a continuous mode during and after training. Emphasis is placed on exploratory learning. Emphasis is also placed on experimental/productive learning rather than reproductive/receptive learning; and rich internalization of knowledge and skills is ensured by following the methodology as described in the following diagram and table:

Duration
The courses fall mainly under three categories for scientists working at implementation level:
(a) 12 week Regular Course on Remote Sensing & GIS -Technology and Applications
(b) 4 week Regular Course on Introduction to GIS and its Applications
(c) Customised Course: Special courses are also organised for a period of 1 to 2 weeks upon request by user organisations. At least 15 trainees have to be sponsored for such courses.

Logistics
Trainees have to make their own arrangement to reach NRSC hostel (located within NRSC campus) on arrival and for return journey. Trainees should report at 0900 hrs on opening day of the Training Programme. Trainees would be busy till 1720 hrs on the last day of the training programme. Since railway stations of Hyderabad (i.e. Nampally), Secunderabad and Kachiguda are located at a distance of 15, 11 and 18 Km, respectively, it is suggested that return journey should not be planned by any train which leaves prior to 1930 hrs on the date of closure of the training programme.
Trainees are advised to book their return journey tickets prior to starting onward journey to Hyderabad. NRSC does not provide any services for the booking of return journey tickets.
Trainee officers coming to NRSC form Secunderabad need to get down (from bus) at Shobana/Vimal cinema hall of Balanagar (on Mumbai highway).Trainee officers coming from Hyderabad(Nampally) need to get down (from bus) at Narsapur cross roads (at Balanagar) and move for about 1 Km towards the Shobana/Vimal cinema hall. NRSC entry/exit gate is located adjacent to HAL entry gate, which is opposite Shobana/Vimal cinema hall. This entry/exit gate of NRSC brings the trainee-officer into the campus of essential staff quarters, and after moving through this campus (about 200m) the trainee- officer would reach the NRSC main security gate. The main entry gate of NRSC is about 200 meters inside from the main road (Bowenpally – Kukatpally road on Mumbai highway).
Facilities and Faculty Resources
They include scientists and engineers specialised in their respective fields; engaged in a number of operational projects of national interest, entrusted on them by many user agencies, from the generation of raw aerial data/satellite imagery to the final interpreted and analyzed output products, in almost all the disciplines of applications like Forestry, Geosciences, Water Resources, Agriculture and Soils, Land Use, Oceanography etc. Engineers are engaged in designing and developing hardware blocks like satellite data acquisition systems, real aperture radar, frame synchronisation and decommutation units, to name a few, with their contributions even in building ground data receiving and processing systems for remote sensing satellites, as well.Needless to mention about our software expertise in image processing and pattern recognition.Credentials also include publications of multi-discipline and inter-discipline research papers in various international journals in the areas of Image processing-pattern recognition, Land Surface Processes (LSP) studies, agro–meteorology, hyperspectral data analysis, GIS and a few scientists also have been in the editorial board of prominent research journals like International Journal of Remote Sensing. Thus, we are richly endowed with wisdom gained by experience, commanding state-of-the-art knowledge fortified by research too.
Facilities at Training and Education Group for the analysis of remote sensing data include state-of-the-art industry standard software and hardware. The labs are equipped with multiple licenses of GIS and Image Processing softwares like ArcInfo, ArcView, GeoMedia Professional, Geomatica, ERDAS IMAGINE, ENVI, Matlab and hardware like robust PIII server/workstation/PC's (Gateway, Digital and Compaq with Windows 95/98/NT/2000 operating systems) and peripherals like large format scanners for analogue to digital conversion in B/W and colour modes, A0 digitizers, A0-A4 plotter/printers.
Award of Certificate
A formal certificate of participation will be awarded to the individual participant on successful completion of the training programme.
Allied Information
Hostel facility with self-contained double bed room (to be shared by two trainees) and moderate furnishing is available on first come first served basis at moderate cost. Canteen facility is available within the campus and works during 0630 – 2030 hrs. It may also be noted that no guest/family will be allowed to stay in the hostel. Information on access to NRSC with transport details, banking facility, other related useful details will be provided on acceptance of the duly filled application, sponsorship and Check list along with the course fee.
Security Aspects (to be observed very seriously)
Camera, Cell/Mobile Phones, Data Bank and Lap tops are not allowed inside the campus / hostel. If you are bringing any magnetic media (Floppy's, CD-ROM's etc.), engineering material, calculator, topo sheets, satellite imagery, aerial photographs or materials of similar kind, PLEASE DECLARE THOSE BEFORE ENTERING IN NRSC AND OBTAIN AN APPROPRIATE PASS FROM THE SECURITY. Floppy's, CD-ROM's etc., can be brought inside after ascertaining their relevance for the training and the contents of these. No additional digital file can be incorporated on these brought-in magnetic media, and if incorporated such material will be seized by NRSC besides initiating disciplinary action on the concerned trainee officer. Details will be sent along with admission confirmation letter.
