Remote sensing applications for forest resources in India go back to the first nationwide mapping forests undertaken by NRSC in early eighties which provided the forest cover statistics that were reliable and based on scientific methods. This exercise has brought an awakening for all the forest managers, scientists, academia, legislators, executives and finally culminated into series of forest conservation and protection strategies enforced by the Government of India. NRSC has demonstrated the capability of the geomatics techniques while working in close collaboration with the state forest departments towards providing them various solutions. While addressing the needs of the forest resource planners and the protected area managers, we have specifically provided key inputs for forest working plans preparation, protected area management plans, preparation of micro plans, catchments area treatment plans, inventory of grazing resources, plantation monitoring, forest type mapping, biodiversity characterization, forest fragmentation. NRSC also provides remote sensing based services for mapping, monitoring and management of forest fire.
